This privacy policy describes the processing of personal data when you visit this website or use the highline reporting form.
Hosting and server logs
The website is hosted by netcup GmbH, Emmy-Noether-Straße 10, 76131 Karlsruhe, Germany. The hosting package uses the server location Manassas, USA. Website data is therefore also processed and stored outside the European Union.
Netcup provides the hosting infrastructure. The association manages the WordPress website and its content. Further information is available in Netcup’s privacy policy.
The server processes technically required connection data such as IP address, time of access, requested address, transferred data volume, referrer and browser information. These data are used to provide the website securely, analyse errors and defend against abusive access. According to Netcup’s published information, webhosting access logs are retained for up to 14 days; the actual retention depends on log rotation. Further information is available in Netcup’s log policy.
The legal basis is our legitimate interest in secure and stable website operation under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.
Anonymous basic statistics
Our server counts public pages served as daily totals per page. These statistics store only the calendar day, page identifier and number of views. They use no analytics cookies, tracking script or visitor identifiers. IP addresses, referrers, device information, query parameters and form entries are not stored in these statistics.
We cannot identify individual visitors or trace their journeys through the website. Repeated views and automated requests may be counted. Daily totals are automatically deleted after 90 days. No data is sent to an analytics provider.
Highline reports
In the highline reporting form we process the region, location, coordinates of both anchors, calculated length, period and your privacy confirmation. You may optionally provide a line name, description, up to two images and an email address.
The data is used to review, coordinate and document planned highlines and to forward reports to the regional contacts responsible within the association. Reports are not publicly accessible. Each report receives a reference number.
The legal basis is your consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR. You may withdraw it at any time with effect for the future.
Retention: Complete reports, including email addresses and uploaded images, are stored permanently in the internal reporting archive. Their continued necessity is reviewed regularly. Following a valid deletion request, we delete or anonymise personal data unless legal obligations or overriding legitimate grounds prevent this.
Upload only images that you are entitled to provide. If other people are identifiable, you must have the necessary permission.
Maps, spam protection and external media
OpenStreetMap and Nominatim
The highline form loads map tiles from the OpenStreetMap Foundation. Using location search also calls the Nominatim service. In particular, your IP address, browser information and search query are transferred to the OpenStreetMap Foundation. The map is an explicitly requested part of the reporting form. Further information is available in the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy.
Esri satellite map
When you select satellite view, your browser loads map tiles from Esri and transfers technically required connection data to Esri. Satellite view is activated only after your selection. Further information is available in the Esri privacy statement.
hCaptcha
We use hCaptcha by Intuition Machines, Inc. to protect the highline form from automated submissions. It may process IP address, technical device and browser data, time spent and interactions. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in protecting the website and form from spam and abuse under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. Data may be processed in the United States. hCaptcha refers to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and Standard Contractual Clauses for transfers. Further information is available in the hCaptcha privacy policy.
We also limit the number of successful reports per sender. For this purpose, the IP address is transformed with a secret, server-specific key into a verification value that cannot be directly reversed. The IP address itself is not stored in the form system for this purpose. The verification value and its counters are retained for no more than 24 hours. A separate verification value, likewise not directly reversible and derived from the form data and uploaded images, prevents a completely identical report from being submitted again for 15 minutes.
The News page can embed posts from our Instagram account. No connection to Instagram is made without your consent. Only when you allow Instagram, your browser loads content from Meta Platforms Ireland Limited. Your IP address, browser data, visited page and interactions may be processed and cookies may be set. If you are signed in to Instagram, it may associate your visit with your account. The legal basis is your consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR.
Further information is available in the Instagram privacy policy.
